Summary

N&D Natural & Delicious Ocean Herring, Pumpkin & Orange Recipe for Adult Cats is a grain-free dry food centered on herring as the first ingredient, supplying readily usable animal protein and marine omega-3s to support lean muscle and overall vitality.

Dehydrated herring further concentrates protein, while hydrolyzed fish helps support digestibility and palatability for picky or sensitive eaters.

Pork fat and hydrolyzed pork liver contribute energy density and flavor, and dried whole eggs add a complete amino acid profile for muscle maintenance.

At 44% crude protein and 20% fat, the formula is energy-dense and best suited to healthy, active adult cats that thrive on higher protein and calories rather than weight-control needs.

Herring oil supplies long-chain omega-3s that promote skin and coat health and help maintain a balanced inflammatory response.

Pumpkin, beet pulp, psyllium, and fructooligosaccharides provide functional fibers that support stool quality, nourish beneficial gut bacteria, and aid hairball passage.

Calcium at 1% and phosphorus at 0.9% contribute to bone, teeth, and normal metabolic functions appropriate for adult maintenance.

Antioxidant support comes from vitamin E and vitamin C alongside plant extracts like green tea and rosemary to help protect cells from oxidative stress.

Added taurine and DL-methionine provide essential sulfur amino acids that support heart function, vision, and healthy skin and coat.

Formulated to meet AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for adult maintenance, this recipe is intended for adult cats rather than kittens or queens during gestation/lactation.

Pros:

  • High marine omega-3 content: DHA at 0.80% and EPA at 0.50% (min) support skin and coat quality, joint comfort, brain function, and cardiovascular health.
  • Robust taurine level: Taurine at a minimum of 0.40% supports normal heart rhythm, retinal health, and bile acid conjugation essential for fat digestion.
  • Antioxidant protection: Vitamin E (600 mg/kg) and vitamin C (300 mg/kg), plus green tea and rosemary extracts, help neutralize free radicals and support immune resilience.
  • L-carnitine inclusion: 300 mg/kg helps transport fatty acids into cells for energy, supporting healthy fat metabolism in active adult cats.
  • Targeted digestive support: Fructooligosaccharides and brewers dried yeast supply prebiotic compounds that feed beneficial gut microbes and promote consistent stools.

Cons:

  • Multiple animal proteins: In addition to fish, the recipe includes pork liver and egg, which may not suit cats needing a strict single-protein elimination diet.
  • Energy-dense formulation: With 20% fat, the calorie density is likely high, which may not be ideal for sedentary or strictly indoor cats prone to weight gain.
  • Legume-derived starches: Pea starch and pea fiber contribute carbohydrates that some owners prefer to avoid in feline diets.
  • Higher ash level: At 8.7% ash, the mineral load is on the higher side and may warrant caution for cats with known urinary or kidney sensitivities; consult your veterinarian.
  • Low crude fiber: At 1.8% fiber, total fiber is modest and may provide less satiety or hairball control than higher-fiber adult formulas.
  • Limited transparency on key metrics: Metabolizable energy and certain minerals (e.g., magnesium) are not provided, making precise portioning and urinary health assessment more difficult.

Missing info?

Provide as many details as possible about N&D [Natural & Delicious]: Ocean – Herring, pumpkin, and orange recipe for adult cats so we can make it better!

How the score is calculated?

The actual calculation of the score is based on sophisticated and advanced algorithm that takes into account multiple parameters.

To simplify the explanation, the calculation is based on three main criteria:

(1) Amount of protein (more is better)

(2) Amount of carbohydrates (less is better)

(3) Quality and source of ingredients.

Based on that 3 main criteria, 9 score calculation rules are used to compare the different foods.

One major assumption is that the closer an ingredient is to the top of the ingredient list, the greater its relative weight and contribution to the food.

In general, cat food is composed of protein, fats, carbohydrates, fibers, vitamins, and minerals.

Protein is the most important component in a cat's diet, and cats primarily get their protein from animal meat.

Fat is a primary source of energy and essential fatty acids.

Carbohydrates are controversial in a cat's diet, as cats are obligate carnivores and typically consume very few carbohydrates.

Fibers play an important role in digestion and food absorption, and vitamins and minerals are essential for different organism functions.

Dry matter values are used to compare the amount of nutrients in different cat foods. This means that moisture is excluded from the equation to provide a more accurate comparison.

Putting all of these and more into a formula results in a product score.

The maximum score a cat food can receive is 100. Points are added or removed based on the score calculation rules.
